Does Personality "Change"? Can It Be Changed?
It is said "Soul of triplets until hundred", but in recent research, it is known that personality changes throughout life (has plasticity).
Generally, following changes are seen as age increases (Principle of Maturity).
- Conscientiousness and Agreeableness rise (Become round and firm to adapt to society)
- Neuroticism decreases (Gain experience and become unshakeable)
In other words, current personality does not last for a lifetime. It is sufficiently possible to approach ideal personality by changing daily action habits, instead of giving up as "I am no good because conscientiousness is low".
"If-Then Planning" to Change Personality
It does not change just by chanting "Let's become more planned". It is necessary to change automatic reaction of brain. So what is effective is to make a concrete rule "If X happens, do Y at that time (Then)" and make it a habit.
- Case of wanting to increase Conscientiousness:
- "If I wake up in the morning, make the bed immediately"
- "If I stand up from desk, put chair in desk"
- Case of wanting to lower Neuroticism:
- "If I think negative things, take deep breath 3 times"
- "If I feel anxiety, write down the content on paper"
- Case of wanting to increase Extraversion:
- "If I enter convenience store, say 'Thank you' to clerk"
By repeating these, neural circuits of brain are rewritten, and gradually fixed as "Personality".
If You Know Yourself, Living Becomes Easier
By knowing your personality characteristics (Instruction Manual), difficulty level of life strategy lowers.
- Find suitable job: Reduce stress of working in environment that does not fit your characteristics (Example: Jump-in sales even though introverted).
- Human relationships improve: Can see objectively "That person is cold not because he dislikes me, but because he is a type with low agreeableness (No malice)".
- Self-affirmation rises: Become able to accept own weaknesses as "Just one of characteristics", and blaming yourself decreases.
