  • This tool is exclusively adapted to Japan's healthcare system.
  • Only costs covered by standard health insurance apply. Private room fees, meals, and advanced treatments are excluded.
  • Multiple eligibility (4+ months hitting the cap per year) and household aggregation are not supported.

Tips

1

By presenting a 'Limit Application Certificate' at the hospital beforehand, you only pay up to the limit at the counter (may not be needed with a MyNumber health card).

2

If there are multiple people in the same household whose monthly out-of-pocket expenses exceed a certain amount (¥21,000 for those under 70), you can combine them via 'Household Aggregation' to get a refund for the amount exceeding the limit.

3

If your total medical expenses from January 1 to December 31 exceed ¥100,000 (varies by income), you may receive a tax refund by filing for a 'Medical Expense Deduction' on your tax return.

FAQ

  • Q1

    Q. Do I enter the 30% cost I actually paid?

    A. No, please enter the total 100% medical cost prior to insurance coverage.

  • Q2

    Q. What is 'Multiple Eligibility' (Tasuu-kai Gaitou)?

    A. If high-cost medical care benefit applies 3 or more times within the past 12 months, the cap is further reduced from the 4th occurrence. This tool does not calculate for multiple eligibility.

  • Q3

    Q. Can I aggregate expenses from different hospitals?

    A. Yes, you can aggregate consultation fees from multiple medical institutions (hospitals, dispensing pharmacies, etc.) within the same month. However, for those under 70, the condition for aggregation is an out-of-pocket payment of ¥21,000 or more per institution.
